Description

Domaine Jean-Michel Gérin , located in Ampuis in the heart of the Côte-Rôtie appellation, is distinguished by its elegant ambition and its family roots spanning six generations. This estate meticulously cultivates legendary plots on steep slopes and mica schist soils: a strong signature of the wines produced. The 2023 Les Grandes Places cuvée fully embodies this identity: from an exceptional lieu-dit, it expresses the complexity, depth, and balance sought by Domaine Jean-Michel Gérin to reveal the very best of Syrah in the Northern Rhône Valley .

Notes and pairings

Notes and pairings

Tasting notes

The wine is a deep garnet with violet highlights, hinting at a dense and ripe structure. The nose reveals powerful aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, cocoa, and licorice, complemented by subtle spices and a delicate floral touch. On the palate, the ample and structured attack gives way to firm yet elegant tannins; the wine displays a beautiful richness, coupled with a mineral freshness that supports its density. The finish is long, persistent, and refined, inviting further tasting.

Food & wine pairings

Pairs perfectly with herb-marinated roast beef, roast rack of lamb or duck breast with cherries.

The Les Grandes Places plot covers approximately 1.4 to 1.6 hectares in the Côte-Rôtie appellation, on steep south/southeast-facing slopes. The soil is composed of mica schist, sometimes schist and decomposed granite, offering optimal drainage and a pronounced mineral expression. The vines are old, tended by hand, and benefit from a unique microclimate. This configuration allows the Syrah to fully express itself, with concentration, finesse, and balance—the signature of the terroir and the estate.

Owner and history

Jean-Michel Gérin founded the estate in 1983, building upon a family lineage established in Ampuis for several generations. His sons, Michaël and Alexis, have since joined the venture, bringing a modern touch while respecting tradition. Their vision revolves around the pure expression of the terroir, organic viticulture, and unwavering commitment to quality in the cellar. This rigorous approach makes the wines of Domaine Jean-Michel Gérin benchmarks of Côte-Rôtie, wines that are powerful, refined, and age-worthy.

Vinification and aging

The estate employs meticulous winemaking techniques: complete destemming, maceration for approximately four weeks, and controlled extraction to preserve finesse and depth. Aging takes place over approximately 22 months in barrels, a significant proportion of which are new, to impart structure and elegance without excess.
For the 2023 Les Grandes Places vintage, this attention to vinification and aging reveals the nobility of the terroir, the balance between power and precision, and offers a wine with strong aging potential.
