THE Tignanello 2018 is often described by critics and by the family Antinori herself like a vintage of "Grace and balance".

While 2015 and 2016 were vintages of power and opulence, 2018 marks a return to a more classic elegance, almost Burgundian in its texture, while affirming its purely Tuscan identity.

THE domaine Tenuta Tignanello is located in the heart of Chianti Classico, on the gentle hills between the valleys of the Greve and Pesa rivers. It covers 319 hectares, of which approximately 165 are dedicated to vineyards. Two of the most prestigious vineyards of domaine, Tignanello and Solaia are located on the same hillside, on soils derived from Pliocene marine marls, rich in limestone and schist. The vines benefit from high daytime temperatures and cooler evenings throughout the growing season. The two emblematic wines of the domaine, Solaia and Tignanello come from these vineyards and have been described by the international press as "among the most influential wines in the history of Italian viticulture". For Marchesi Antinori, Solaia and Tignanello represent a constant challenge and an endless passion. domaine de Tignanello owns vineyards of indigenous Sangiovese grape varieties as well as other non-traditional varieties such as Cabernet Franc.

    Owner and history

For more than six centuries, and since 1385, the date on which Giovanni di Piero Antinori became a member of the “Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri”, the Guild of Florentine Winegrowers, the family Antinori is dedicated to the art of winemaking. Throughout its history, which spans twenty-six generations, the family Antinori managed the operation directly, making innovative and sometimes bold decisions, with the utmost respect for traditions and the environment.

    Vinification and aging

The climatic conditions of this season prompted us to redouble our concentration and rigor, both in the vineyards during the harvest and during the transport of the grapes to the winery, where sorting and the first stages of winemaking were essential to obtain an optimal result.
During fermentation in truncated conical vats, each must macerated on the skins, with particular attention paid to preserving aromas, extracting color, and developing supple and elegant tannins.
Racking was carried out after rigorous daily sampling and tasting. Once separated from the skins, the wine was transferred to small oak barrels where malolactic fermentation took place, enhancing its aromatic finesse and complexity.

The wine was then aged for approximately 14 to 16 months in French and Hungarian oak barrels, a mix of new and second-fill barrels. After this initial aging period, the final blend was created, and the wine completed its maturation in barrels.

Tignanello, made primarily from Sangiovese and a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, underwent an additional aging period of 12 months in the bottle before being marketed.

    The team's opinion

The year 2018 was characterized by a wet spring followed by a summer without excessive heat, with significant temperature variations between day and night in September. This is the ideal vintage for those who value finesse over power. It is less "impressive" at first glance than the 2016 or 2021, but it gains in complexity and elegance as it breathes in the glass.
