The red wines of Côte-Rôtie are made from Syrah and Viognier grapes grown on a terroir of mica schist and gneiss. The wines exude aromas of black and red fruits, violets, and spices. The vineyards are spread across the Côte Brune and Côte Blonde slopes, and the vines are cultivated on terraces or hillsides. Robert Parker contributed to the renown of the Côte-Rôtie appellation and the Rhône Valley by rating the wines of Domaine Guigal. Among the appellation's finest winemakers are Jean-Michel Gerin, Stéphane Ogier, and Yves Cuilleron.
