The Château Smith Haut Lafitte vineyard spans 78 hectares of a unique terroir composed of deep Günzian gravel, which imparts minerality and power to the wines. The soil, a blend of pebbles, quartz, and clayey sands, plays a fundamental role in the perfect ripening of the grapes. The vines, of advanced average age, are cultivated with care using sustainable viticulture practices, with a deep respect for the surrounding ecosystem. Each plot is worked specifically to fully express the diversity and richness of the terroir, guaranteeing the authenticity and elegance for which Smith Haut Lafitte wines are renowned.

Owner and history

Since 1990, Château Smith Haut Lafitte has belonged to Florence and Daniel Cathiard, former Olympic champions who became passionate winemakers. Their dynamic and quality-driven vision has propelled the estate to the forefront of Bordeaux's wineries. Deeply committed to environmental responsibility and innovation, they have introduced numerous sustainable practices, from viticulture to winemaking. The Cathiards have successfully combined tradition and modernity to enhance this exceptional terroir, making Smith Haut Lafitte a model of excellence where each vintage reflects a relentless pursuit of purity, emotion, and perfection.

Vinification and aging

Winemaking at Château Smith Haut Lafitte is carried out with meticulous precision: the grapes are hand-sorted, then vinified in temperature-controlled, truncated conical wooden vats for gentle and precise extraction. Aging, which lasts between 16 and 18 months, takes place in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new, selected from the finest coopers. For the 2024 vintage, this careful aging process enhances the aromatic complexity and refines the tannic structure, promising a wine with great aging potential, perfectly balanced between richness, depth, and freshness.
