    Description

Located in Varrains, in the heart of the Saumur-Champigny appellation, Domaine Antoine Sanzay has become, in just a few vintages, a leading name in the Loire Valley wine region. Heir to a family heritage passed down through generations, Antoine Sanzay cultivates his vines organically, on the highest quality limestone and clay-limestone soils in the area. A sensitive and demanding winemaker, he makes it a point of honor to accurately express the identity of the Cabernet Franc grape and the finesse of the local tuffeau limestone. The 2020 La Paterne cuvée perfectly embodies this philosophy: a vibrant, precise wine with a singular character, born from meticulous work both in the vineyard and in the cellar.

    Notes and pairings

    Tasting notes

The brilliant ruby robe of La Paterne 2020 immediately captivates with its radiance. The nose reveals delicate aromas of red fruit, violet, and subtle herbaceous notes. On the palate, the attack is supple, giving way to a fluid and elegant texture, supported by a lovely freshness. The fine, silky tannins ensure excellent structure. The finish lingers persistently, leaving an impression of purity and harmony.

    Food & wine pairings

This Saumur-Champigny will perfectly complement a roast veal, a filet mignon with herbs or even a rabbit terrine with prunes.

The Domaine Antoine Sanzay vineyard covers approximately fifteen hectares in Varrains, within the historic Saumur-Champigny terroir. The vines destined for La Paterne are rooted in tuffeau soils, typical of the region, mixed with flinty clay. This exceptional geology, combined with organic farming practices that respect the natural balance, allows for the production of remarkably high-quality grapes, faithfully reflecting the minerality and finesse of the Loire Valley.

    Owner and history

At the helm of the family estate since 1999, Antoine Sanzay embodies a generation of committed and passionate Loire Valley winemakers. A former rugby player, he has successfully applied his values of rigor, respect, and patience to his craft. Highly attentive to the expression of the terroir, he is fully dedicated to demanding organic viticulture. His precise and sincere work, praised by critics, has allowed his wines to join the elite of the Loire Valley's great wines.

    Vinification and aging

At the estate, winemaking relies on low-intervention practices: manual harvesting, gentle maceration in concrete tanks and spontaneous fermentations.
For La Paterne 2020, Antoine Sanzay opted for aging in barrels that had previously held several wines, for about ten months. This choice allows the wine to preserve its aromatic vibrancy while gaining complexity and structure, without masking the fruit. The result: a subtle and approachable wine, built for aging.
