    Description

The essential reference for great Chilean wines.

95/100 pts VINOUSThe ripe and complex nose is both fruity and jammy with notes of blackcurrant and blackberry, layers of herbs and ash, sweet spices, cardamom, hints of vanilla, cedar, and orange shortbread. Delicious and full-bodied, with grippy tannins. This is a concentrated, delicately sculpted red, to which the oak lends volume, with beautiful balance and a long finish.

Terroir : Located in the Puente Alto district, in the Maipo Valley, Almaviva cultivates Bordeaux grape varieties on gravelly soils.

Viticulture : The year 2020 was exceptionally dry.

Winemaking : no pumping. Pressing in small vertical presses and aging for 20 months in French oak barrels, 73% of which are new and the rest second use.

Born from a collaboration between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and the Chilean winery Concha y Toro , this unique vintage combines Bordeaux refinement with the power of Andean terroirs. Located near Santiago, the estate benefits from a Mediterranean climate ideal for cultivating noble grape varieties.

    Tasting notes

Almaviva 2020 displays an intense purple robe with violet highlights. The nose, complex and expressive, blends aromas of ripe black fruit, cedar, sweet spices, and blond tobacco. On the palate, the texture is silky and dense, with fine, perfectly integrated tannins. The robust structure is balanced by remarkable freshness. The finish is long and elegant, marked by notes of blackcurrant, graphite, and cocoa. An intense and harmonious wine to discover now.

    Food & wine pairings

This exceptional wine will enhance a rack of lamb roasted with herbs, a matured beef fillet or even game in sauce.

    Producer

The Almaviva vineyard is located in the historic Puente Alto area, south of Santiago, in the Maipo Valley. Its very poor alluvial soil, composed of gravel and clay, is ideal for producing great red wines. The Mediterranean climate, with cool nights and warm days, promotes a slow and balanced ripening of the grapes. The vines, planted at high density, benefit from optimal sunshine and rigorous irrigation.

    Owner and history

The Almaviva project was born in 1997 from the union of Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Concha y Toro, two iconic figures in the wine world. This Franco-Chilean alliance led to the creation of a great wine, inspired by the First Growth Classified Wines of Bordeaux. Today, this ambition continues under the joint management of the two houses, with a constant focus on excellence. Their shared vision: to express the terroir of Puente Alto in exceptional wines with international renown.

    Vinification and aging

At Domaine Almaviva, winemaking takes place in a gravity-flow cellar, with meticulous attention paid to each plot. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with gentle extraction to preserve the elegance of the fruit.
The Almaviva 2020 vintage was then aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels, giving the wine depth, complexity and a perfect balance between fruit and wood.
