Inglenook

Founded in 1879 by Gustave Niebaum in the heart of Napa Valley, Inglenook was reborn starting in 1975 under the vision of Francis Ford and Eleanor Coppola, who were determined to restore its prestige.

The estate favors a classic, balanced style, marrying the power of Rutherford with European-inspired freshness, characterized by structured tannins, well-integrated oak, and great aging potential.

          History of the Estate Inglenook

          the story of Inglenook

A Story of Cinema (and Passion)Inglenook's destiny is tied to two visionaries:

          • Gustave Niebaum (The Founder): This Finnish sea captain invested his fortune to create an estate capable of rivaling Bordeaux's premier crus. He built the iconic stone château in 1887.
          • Francis Ford Coppola (The Restorer): The famous director of The Godfather bought part of the estate in 1975 using his film profits. He spent over 40 years repurchasing the original parcels, reunifying the vineyard, and reclaiming the historical name "Inglenook" (which had been sold to a corporate firm).

The Terroir: The Famous "Rutherford Dust"The vineyard spans approximately 95 hectares, certified organic.

          • Geology: The vines are planted on alluvial fans at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains. The well-draining soils are composed of gravel and volcanic sediment.
          • The "Dust" Signature: This distinctive terroir gives the wines a unique tannin texture, often described as a "fine dust" or a very elegant earthy and spicy character that sets Rutherford apart from the rest of Napa.

A "Franco-Californian" Winemaking PhilosophySince 2011, technical direction has been led by Philippe Bascaules, who joined straight from Château Margaux.

          • The Style: In contrast to the trend of ultra-powerful, heavily oaked Napa wines, Inglenook seeks freshness, balance, and moderate alcohol levels.
          • Innovation: The estate features a state-of-the-art winery with plot-segmented stainless steel tanks, allowing surgical precision when blending its flagship wine, Rubicon.

The Iconic WinesThe estate primarily produces three major red cuvées:

          • Rubicon: The flagship. A Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend sourced from the finest historical blocks (such as the Garden or Niebaum plots). It is a complex, deep wine built for aging.
          • Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon: More accessible, it reflects the overall elegance of the estate and the Rutherford appellation.
          • Edizione Pennino: A rich, spicy Zinfandel, crafted as a tribute to the Coppola family's Italian roots.

Why Is This Vineyard Exceptional? It is one of the few wineries in California that succeeds in combining the richness of Californian fruit with a European-style acidity and fine tannin structure. It is a place where you feel the weight of history in every row of vines.
